Keen for A Queen Bed

At BEDWORKS we pride ourselves on always having a wide range of quality products. We have a large variety of QUEEN bed frames to choose from in both timber and upholstered styles, and with or without storage options.

The queen sized bed is, without a doubt, the most popular style in the world. In Sydney, queen beds are reported by retailers to be - by far - their biggest seller. This should come as no surprise. For the average single person craving a copious amount of space and a premium of comfort, it’s a perfect choice. For couples, its dimensions (153cm x 203cm) allow both people to have their own space, while not feeling cramped when cuddled together on a cool night. At the same time, the size is reasonable for most fair-sized rooms, allowing enough floor space to easily navigate the area and to add attractive furnishings and decorations. How does it feel? Well, moving from a double to a queen bed is a memorable experience, as anyone who has recently done so can attest. Bed and mattress makers may overuse “bigger is better” as a tagline, but when it comes to sleeping space, extra real estate truly does make a surprisingly large difference, even when seemingly not that large of a change. It’s therefore astounding to realise that just over half a century ago, the queen bed as we know it did not even exist!

History of the Queen Bed

Up until the 1940s, and in many cases into the 1950s, sleep choices were simple. The single bed lived up to its name and was the main bed of choice for single adults and growing young adults. Similarly, when Cupid had shot his arrow and love bloomed, the resulting couple would make the obvious choice of purchasing a double bed for their abode – ‘the’ choice for two people in one bed. If you were a bit more well off, or a larger individual, you might put down a few extra dollars for a double, but that was pretty much all the variation you would see. Cot for baby, single for junior, and double for Mum and Dad. So what changed? Well, for one, we as humans did – in that we had been getting taller! For the past few centuries, there had been a gradual change – but in the past 150 years, the average height of humans has increased about 10cm – a considerable difference in such a short time! Scientists have attributed this change to better nutrition. In the 1940s and 1950s, however, people were less concerned about the science of the matter, and more concerned about the size of their beds! Well, that’s not entirely true – because, in the 1940s, American bed manufacturers made their first attempt at selling everything from two single beds pushed together to one-off large bed frames…and failed miserably. However, in the 1950s in the postwar boom, a clever marketing campaign and the standardisation of two new large bed sizes took the “bigger is better” society by storm. These two new beds were, of course, the queen-sized and king-sized bed. It may have all begun in America, and our dimensions are slightly different, but when it comes to queen beds, Sydney and Australia at large have taken to them passionately!

Why The Queen Bed?

The queen bed has proven to be as popular as it has for a number of reasons. The overarching theme, though, is similar to that of the modern midsize sedan – it is the perfect marriage of comfort and practicality. Sales jargon aside, a double really is too small for two adults to comfortably sleep in. If budget, room size or other factors mean a double is the largest bed possible, then that is certainly understandable. However, beyond that, for a good and healthy night’s sleep, a queen should be the minimum size bed a couple considers. The same goes for larger individuals and those known to move around often while sleeping. Further, while the situation has improved through the years, those seeking a more luxurious mattress will find the options certainly increase when buying a queen sized bed or larger. The reasoning for this is simple – those with higher budgets that allow them to buy queen, king and larger beds are also more like to be able to afford mattresses with premium components and that are more meticulously constructed.

The practicality factor is also an important one. King beds are simply too wide for certain rooms. And remember – there is no hard and fast rule that larger beds must be reserved for the master bedroom. Households that often invite overnight guests will often choose to put a queen bed in the guest bedroom, giving their guests an unexpectedly luxurious sleep experience, which is no doubt appreciated! They are not as heavy or unwieldy as a king bed can be, thus easier to move (both in and out of houses/rooms and for rearrangement purposes). And of course, a main consideration is price. King beds and mattresses can be many hundreds of dollars more than their queen counterparts. If your needs require the extra space of a king and/or your pocketbook allows, the king is a nice step up, but for most buyers the queen will suffice and they will be happy with money saved.
