King Beds Fit For A King

At BEDWORKS we pride ourselves on always having a wide range of quality products. The king size bed: it’s the type of bed that most adults aspire to own. Stately in name, dimensions, and appearance, it is no surprise that the KING BED is considered ‘the goal’ for most individuals with the space for one, especially couples. In Australia, the king bed measures a roomy 183cm x 203cm. Doing the math, you can immediately start to see how much space that allows a couple come bedtime, much less a single individual. However, much like a team is more than the sum of its parts, a king bed is more than just the dimensions of its measurements. Anyone who has slept on a king bed can attest that those extra centimetres of width when compared to even a queen size bed feel like far more than the numbers suggest. Yes, a king bed is a couple’s dream. But it may surprise younger buyers to discover that the king bed is not actually a concept brought to us from the days of royalty – actually, the king bed is a relatively new concept!

History of the King Bed

Unsurprisingly, the concept of the king bed came from the land of “bigger is better”, the United States. Up until the 1940s, bed choices were very simple – single beds for children and most single adults, and double beds for couples, and adults who were either larger or fancied themselves a bit more opulent than the regular fellow. But an issue had arisen – even compared to the beginning of the 20th century, adults had started to become taller. Manufacturers first tried to address this trend by suggesting buying two single beds and then offering custom made larger beds. However, these attempts were seen as gimmicks (not to mention a waste of money) and were largely ignored. Soon, however, things started to come together for the bedding industry and for Americans needing more sleeping space. By the 1950s, a postwar boom meant Americans had money in their pockets and big houses to furnish. The bedding industry banded together and created an impressive PR campaign. “Measure Your Mattress Month” was a real thing, and the suggestion to “Buy Bigger, Sleep Better” was irresistible. A comment still heard often today – that two adults in a double bed each have the same relative space as a baby in a crib – came from this era as well…and, by the way, is absolutely true! Most importantly – manufacturers finally standardised their new larger bed sizes, naming them – you guessed it - ‘King’ and ‘Queen’ beds. A little-known fact is that standard bed sizes vary depending on where you are in the world. In Australia, the dimensions of our king beds vary ever so slightly from the American bed of the same name, with the width (183cm) being 10cm less that of its U.S. counterpart. This difference will not at all be felt when lying in one, but it is appreciated when an extra 8cm is needed to fit that beautiful bedside table between the bed and the door.

Why Choose A King Bed?

So when should you go king size? Well, it’s not just to show off to your mates and make fun of them for “only” having a queen-sized bed (although we certainly won’t stop you). First, a king size bed is the bed of choice for any adult well over 180cm. While it is the same length as a queen, we all know that very few of us sleep perfectly straight and in place. The extra real-estate in width allows for comfortable movement throughout the night, even for rather tall sleepers. As for couples, this same extra space means more space for each individual. A queen-sized bed will certainly provide the average couple with space to sleep comfortably, but for those who know they will, at times, want a bit of extra personal space for a sound night’s sleep, the king gives that extra ‘buffer.’ As for those with growing families, the king size bed will make it easier for all involved when little ones want to join Mum and Dad.
